+ In one sentence, tell us about your idea.
I am working on Nam-Lolwe Kayaking Excursion, a project that aims to harness eco-tourism through kayaking adventures on Lake Victoria in Dunga community, Kisumu, Kenya, by combining adventure tourism with community engagement and conservation to tackle economic, environmental, and social challenges.
+ Describe your ideal collaborative partner or partners.
My ideal collaborative partner or partners would be persons who can help us scale our impact by providing expertise in sustainable tourism, community development, or by donating kayaks from enterprises engaged in related kayaking activities.
+ What is the most immediate or most pressing challenge you're facing right now?
Our main pressing challenge is purchasing additional kayaks and equipment, allowing us to accommodate more tourists and train more local fishermen as guides.
+ What is it about your idea that makes you feel good?
What makes me feel good about this idea and project is the fact that we tackle economic, environmental, and social challenges as a unit. Providing an alternative livelihood for the fishermen and women melts my heart.
+ What makes your idea innovative? Why has no one ever done it before?
By offering non-motorized tours, we aim to reduce water pollution and raise awareness about preserving Lake Victoria’s ecosystem. The initiative not only helps protect marine life but also addresses socio-economic challenges like unemployment (training fishermen as guides) and rising HIV/AIDS rates in fishing communities, creating a positive long-term impact.
+ Who will benefit the most from your idea?
The fishermen community living along the Lake Victoria region, specifically the Dunga Beach fishing community for the pilot project.
+ At Sigmund, we are interested in ideas at the intersection of People, Planet, and Profit. How does your idea support these three categories?
People: The idea empowers families by training fishermen, giving them sustainable livelihood options.
Planet: The project reduces water pollution by using non-engine kayaks and raises awareness about protecting marine ecosystems.
Profit: Charges for excursions include fees for guides and kayak maintenance, supporting community members directly.
+ Ideally, when would you launch this idea?
